Is it possible to make a dog proof tractor? We made the permanent coop/pen as predator proof as we could possibly think - with many thanks to all of you forum contributors! Buried fencing, electric fencing, bird net over the top. We added another layer of electric fencing with strands at 4 different heights after this photo was taken. We have 6 dogs and 6 chickens. The dogs tend to dig more than jump, but with the lightweight bird net, I didn't want to take any chances with them getting close enough to jump over the fence. (I tried introducing the dogs to the chicks, but some of our dogs were feral, wolf mixes, etc., so I don't think some of them will ever not hunt them given a chance).

We would like to extend the chicken's yard, or build them a tractor. Since we won't be digging down 8 inches to bury fencing whenever we move a tractor, is it possible to make the bottom of the fence secure when there is uneven terrain? We could probably figure out a way to run electric fencing around the tractor, but we need to absolutely eliminate any ways for the chickens to get out.
I appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

Your coop is beautiful! Could you put wire on the bottom of your tractor, also? Maybe use something sturdy, like a 1/2" hardware cloth on the sides, but a more open wire on the bottom, so the grass will still come through for the chickens to nibble. It would inhibit their scratching a bit, but a dog digging under the side of the tractor would just hit more wire.

We live on the side of a hill, so I know what you mean about uneven terrain. It's a real pain.

Thanks Woodland Woman! I've seen mention of hardware cloth in other posts but I don't know what it is. What is it made of? Is it strong enough to keep a dog out?

Your coop is very nice!! Those are gonna be some spoiled chickens.

Beautiful yard too!!

I live on 2.5 acres of which only .25 of acre is flat. So I know what you mean about that. Our portable stroller as we call it has no bottom. Just 2 x 4 frame with 1/4" cage wire. Sorry I can't help with the dog proofing.

1/2" hardware cloth is one of the strongest and safest materials you can use for a run or tractor. It's sold as a roll, like other fencing materials. It's called hardware, because it's made out of metal, and cloth, because it has a basic weave structure like cloth does. The wires are woven over and under. The spaces between the wires make 1/2" squares.

The bad thing about it is that it's more expensive.

The good things about it are that it's very strong and has small holes. An animal won't tear it, like lightweight chicken wire. Raccoons can't reach through it and pull a chicken apart. Gross, but it happens. Chickens can't stick there heads out, looking around and then get them bitten off. Small weasels and rats can't get through it to eat chicks.

I think it's great for tractors. It's great for runs, if a person has the money for it. It's great for covering ventilation holes and windows, to keep a coop secure. My husband just brought home another roll for me. It's better than flowers!

Hardware cloth also comes in a 1/4" version, but that uses a finer gauge (diameter) wire and isn't as strong.

i use hog panels around the perimeter of my pen. first i attached plastic netting with 1" squares, then, over this i attached the hog panel. i don't think a dog could tear throug h this. also the electric fence is an excellent means to deter animals. i've used them for years to confine hogs, cows, goats, dogs etc... but it does require maintenance, don't let it sag and touch the ground and keep weeds off of it (it'll ground out and not work. nice coop!!!!
