I was away but my pet sitter said a huge raccoon got in the coop around midnight last night. It killed two of my chicks, including Lucy who was supposed to be an easter egger but started growing a puff on her head a few weeks ago and was looking a lot like a Polish. Anyway, she was really special to me. My last remaining chick is an Australorp, about 7 weeks old and is in a box in the bathroom. She is sleeping a lot and she doesn't look too good, but I can't see any injuries. Is there anything I can do to help her or just wait and see how it goes?

They had only been out of the brooder for about a week, so I feel terrible that I had put them in an obviously unsafe coop. My kids are very sad, and so am I. Here is a picture of Lucy. I was going to post it to ask if anyone could tell what breed she was, but I guess it doesn't matter much now. *sniff sniff*

I'm so sorry! It's so hard to lose any of our pets. Please don't beat yourself up though, it has happened to many people who thought they had a secure coop. It's truly amazing what a raccoon can do.

Is there anyway to get a friend or two for your lone Australorp? I'm guessing she's pretty scared right now too and chickens are such social birds, they need to be with another chicken.

As someone who just lost a chicken while away from home, I understand a little of how helpless and frustrated you might feel about this loss. So very sorry.

Thinking of you...

Sorry you lost your birds. We had a loss too that was due to us not fixing a hole we knew could be a problem. That taught us our lesson!

I'm so sorry for your losses...

Give her baby aspirin dissolved in her water for pain.
have you checked her over to see if she's injured anywhere? she may still be in shock over seeing the raccoon take out her friends.

How much aspirin should I give her?

I haven't looked too closely. I looked, but didn't really examine her. Her eyes are shut and she has moved a couple of times but is mostly still. I am going to let her sleep and see how she is in the morning.

Thanks, everyone.
