I'm not sure what catagory to post this. I was wondering if anyone has installed an electric fence and what you think about them. I just installed one today for my chickens.

I like my electric fence, it is used in conjunction with our regular fencing but after a few "pops" the dogs learned to leave it alone. The only issue I have ever had with the electric fence is that at first it wasn't "hot" enough and the dogs just ignored it, also it grounded out too easily by grass and such. As long as your area is small you should be able to get by with a small charger as long as you be sure to keep it weed free.

I have one lining my coop. Its the cheap single wire method. I've seen my dogs stop dead in thier tracks once they hit it. I've gotten zapped many times and so has my kids. Oh, and there was a melted squirrel on it too.

I put it about 3 inches from the ground to prevent fox digging under ( we had a bad experience with that)

Double strand around the horse pasture, 7 acers split down the middle. Will be using it on the coop and run when it is finished. The horses won't get with in a foot of it and it will be all over the coop and run with all the predators we have in the area.
 
I have had one to keep the bears out of the runs.
You can tell when a bear touches it for the first time, it can be heard for some distance. After that they will walk around it looking for an opening, when they don't find one they walk off. It is like they sense the electricity in the wire. I always tell people to get one 2 or 3 times the power you need, for you will be adding on in the future.
 
My husband is retired but his field was electronics. We bought heavy duty. My brother had electric wire around his horse pasture and the horses wouldn't come close to it.
 
My husband just put electric fence around my coup/pen..he started at bottom about 3 or 4 inches off ground and I hace bricks laying flat on ground right up next to the chicken fenceing, under the first strand , anyway he put 4 strand all way around distancing them apart..see what happens..so far so good..
 
I love my electric fence. I use it for the horses and goats as well as the chickens. One wire on top, to prevent anything climbing over, one, low to the ground to prevent digging or trying to go through. We've had some coyotes try and to through the fence or under. A couple of shocks is all they need. They'll find another way around.

My Fjord mare is the best protection in my back pasture for dogs, coyotes or fox. She goes after them with determination and gusto.
