How do I make the nests inaccessible to the rats ?
If you can put a wide area of metal flashing on all climbing approaches to the nestbox, preferably with as few seams as possible and the seams as unclimbable as possible. That will do it, or anyhow make 'em have to *work*
I think you'll be ok as long as you build paranoid in the first place and then keep a close eye on things, which is clearly your plan anyhow
