Holy smokes, first day of school and I can't even do the homework. DS needs to write a 1 page assessment of a story. We read the story, now what? I have no idea what an assessment of a story is. Any literature people out there? Its 9th grade world lit. if it helps.

I don't know how to help you. CAn you email the teacher? Call someone who had the teacher last year?

It's more vague of a word than I'd use for an assignment.

The only e-mail we have for her is her school e-mail. I would imagine shes gone for the day. Its due tomorrow. She is new, and today was DS's first day in high school. He hates to write in the first place. He is one of 3 freshmen in her class. The rest are mostly juniors with a few seniors.

I'm a nurse, and I assess my patients. You check their vital signs, eyes, ears, lung sounds, etc. It helps nurses notice if something isn't right, or if somebody is improving or going downhill. Maybe it's what you got out of reading the paper, for example, "This story is about the hardship Mr. Jones encountered while he was..." Maybe it should be your take on the story.

I don't know if this helps or not, though.

He should have a paper with guidelines on the assignment or notes taken when the teacher described the assignment. If not that's his first lesson on high school-know what the teacher wants in the assignment before leaving class. Yes I know I make it sound so simple and I know it's not. My son starts high school on the 24th and I am so not looking forward to it.

I agree with Chickylaura. We often have to do similar assignments and usually we write about one to three pages about the important aspects of the book or piece of literature using quotes from the book itself. Typically I will pick something important that stood out to me and write about it. In your son's case, it sounds like the teacher just wants their opinion on the book and perhaps what the book meant to him. Sometimes teachers give vague assignment descriptions to see exactly what the students decide to do with it. Since its the first day of school, I would just have your child do the best he can because I have a feeling the teacher will not overly fault him if he did the assignment incorrectly. Just make sure your sons questions the teacher about the next assignment if she will be handing them out on a regular basis.

Deep breath. They're just wigging you out by calling it an assessment. Sounds like a basic book report to me. Approach it like book report. Have him jot down the basics: main characters, conflict, resolution, theme, and then put them into paragraph form.

Well, problem is, it was just a page short story about 1 person and a few things he did. Almost like it was a piece of a story. So we are trying to write a page, about a page.

Since it is so short, how about looking for the author's use of language--are there any similies, metaphors, etc. Or, he could discuss author's purpose.

Pretty vague assignment. :/That's a big "no-no" where I teach! Good luck! I teach HS English so PM me if I can ever help. I will be off and on this evening.

If I was writing the assessment, I would probably pick out one aspect of the short story that struck me as interesting or relevent and pick that apart. To really oooo and ahhh the teacher, he could use quotes from the short story and cite them at the end of his paper.

I know how it feels to look at something and think there is just nothing to write about. However, when he starts writing about something specific, he'll probably just keep writing and before you know it, he'll have a page. Tell him not to over stress the assignment. Its only the first day of high school, and chances are it will not count very much, if at all, in his entire grade.
