So I have been battling with my new incubator and the hygrometer. I put the hygrometer in and it showed a humidty of 28% so I put a bit more water in the bator....a few hours later it was reading 68% and I flipped.
so, I tried opening the vent..no good humidty starting rising. So, speckledhen told me how to calibrate the hygrometer and I set it out to do that for 8 hours. Meanwhile, elevating the lid of the bator to let some fo the humidty escape but not letting the temp fal below 99.5. So....3:30 am comes around (the 8 hour mark for calibration) and I check it to see if it says 75% (which it should) nope it reads 67%...cool now I know it is reading 7% lower than actual. I put it in the bator and the reading an hour later was 64%
...so, I battle this bator until 5 am and then go to bed.
I call speckledhen this morning, panicked and her sweet DH, Tom tells me to use a pencil under the corner if I cannot sponge out any water. so, I do that....it is working. YAY
A couple hours of that and the humidty is great, reading at 36% so 43% actual. But the temp is dropping below 99 degrees. What to do? I think about for a bit and come up with an indian fix...
I have some red ear turle shells that I cut the belly from, drill and so forth for craft projects...well it is thinner than the pencil, strong enough to support the bator corner and sterilied...so I slip it in there. For an hour or so now the temp is running 99.7 - 99.9 and the humidty is staying around 34% or 41% actual. YAY!
It looks funny but it works!
