Hello to all you forum users. I am from Australia.
Many years ago when my children were small we put two eggs in an electric fyring pan and in around 21 days we had two beautiful chickens. These grew up to become quite large grey hens. We named them Gwendoline and Geraldine. My children watched as they hatched and then cared for them until they were able to fend for themselves.

Back to the frying pan. I lined it with cotton wool and set the temp, we didn't put the eggs in until it was constant. Each day we would turn the eggs very gently and for the humidity I put a damp wash cloth in with them. After what seemed like forever we were amazed to hear small sounds coming from the eggs. These sounds got louder every day and finally one morning when we went to turn them there were signs of hatching.
We all watched intently and witnessed the birth of a damp little body that soon became a ball of fluff. The second egg hatched a day or two later again being witnessed by all in the household. These two little babies were the talk of school projects for quite some time and were also household pets.
I have only ever tried to do this once but would love to give it another go. Have any one of you ever tried this, just as an experiment?

!! and now im off to find an electric frying pan to try this out hahah

No, but I am ready too!!! Isn't it amazing what you can do with just common household items and a good idea!! I would imagine you kept it at the lowest temp. possible . . .wonder if its really what it says on the dial?? I am just amazed!!

when we were researching home made incubators, we ran across quite a few "how-to's" with this method...

if it's what you have, make it work...

when i brought home my first day old chicks, i didn't have a heat lamp.... i plugged in the heating pad and set it at the warmest setting, folded it in thirdsand covered it with a recieving blanket which got exchanged for a clean one every few days...
when the chicks were off it more than they were on it i took it out.... it worked.. all my chicks made it to be running around the yard... and i did this with a batch of banties too...
and their brooder, was an old rabbit cage i still had.. lol.. i never throw out pet stuff cause you never know when you might use ot for what it wasn't made for.. rofl...

good luck with your next try.. take pics and keep notes and you can put up a little page here when you're done...

That's awesome!
I hatched my first chicks in a home made incubator made out of 2 cardboard boxes for my students when I used to teach science. I lined the bottom of the larger box with newspaper put the smaller box in, lined all sides with more newspaper for insulation-drilled holes in sides for ventilation (tough to get through all the layers of newspaper), cut square out of the top and taped a piece of plexiglass over this (for a viewing window) then put in a 25watt bulb. I used a digital meat thermometer that beeped when it got over a preset temp and then spent the next 3 weeks opening the lid every time that beeping started.
I had students take them home at night (with permission and signed agreements from parents ahead of time) and I took them home on weekends and it drove my husband buggy when that beeping went off in the middle of the night. I kept them next to the bed and I got pretty good at lifting that lid with my toe till the temp cooled down a little without having to wake up completely! Almost all of the eggs hatched! Surprising since my students took turns doing a lot of the care during the school day as well as on school nights (or Mom and Dad did it).
Next time I will be smart, like you, and make sure the temp is constant before I add the eggs, or better yet I will get a thermostat. Although your way sounds like a lot less labor. It was a lot of work for a one-time use 'bator.
