You guys are so hilarious.

I'm going to Lowes on monday to buy the lumber for my first chicken coop! I'm planning to go to the show in Morganton to pick out my peeps. I think I want to start with 8-10, and aim for 1-3 roosters. I'm planning for growth, building big! I've looked at the breeds, but was wondering what people in this area has had success with. We're in the foothills, near Lenoir, so we see the teens in the winter, but still 90+ humid days. What breeds do well in this climate? I'm not wanting to have to provide heat, only a good, draft-free coop. I really like the idea of using broody hens to grow my flock, and gather silkies make good mothers. Would it be a good idea to try to get one or two? I'm going to make a "broody pen" part of the coop, with a seperate pop-door and run to go with it, I want babies to fill the nest box and camp freezer.

they are not tough Em they is tender.

yep dark byrd games do come to mind as an all round good chicken. Also Orpingtons for their great personalities, good mothers too. I enjoyed watching my game hen with her brood of 10 she was an excellent mother, she stayed with her brood for 6 weeks and when it was time to wean she just went up into a tree for the night and they went into the coop by themselves.. I tried to talk her down out of that tree [I was worried something would get her for sure] but the next morning there she was and her chicks never acknowledged she was their mama after that. she taught them well. There are alot of Chickens that make good brooders and mamas, and some that don't, just depending on what you want, looks, size, temperment. I have some cochin bantams that are wonderful broodies, mamas and lay eggs faithfully [though small eggs] but still taste great. and I have some Brahma hens[ big chickens] that are the same lay big eggs, make wonderful pets but haven't had one go broodie and they are over a year old so it's best to do your research pick out some breeds your interested in and then go to that breeds thread and ask questions and read up on them. Then you'll know without a doubt which ones your looking for.And if you still are looking ask Em about EMus she might be able to help you out there

I went to bed and stayed there till 1:15 still not sleeping so came down to see if anyone else was having trouble, think it has to do with the full moon? And I have read of people keeping silkies in winter without heat. But I am going to get one of those heat mats for mine. I do know they will cuddle more than other chickens though.
