I've had huge issues with rats since getting chickens 2 years ago. an exterminator in the fall convinced me to try poison in traps (those black boxes) he said the chickens could NEVER get the poison as it is locked up inside around a wire. well, after removing a few of the boxes because they were moved by the hens, i left one where i thought the hens would ignore it. wrong. the other day it was moved and on it's side. i picked it up, no more poison inside and a few little pieces on the ground. UH OH!

called my vet and got a six week dose of vitamin k for all 14 hens. treated them yesterday with a large dosage to start with based on vets recommendations. they each got 7 ml today. i picked each one up and put it in the bottom of their beaks which they were kind of forced to swallow.

they look ok but most have diarrhea. i will provide yogurt for them as i believe it will help.

has anyone had this happen before and did anyone have any troubles with the vit k affecting them in ways I should know about?

I am not sure about Vit. K, but the Chicken Whisper just said the other day that you shouldn't give yogurt to chickens. Apparently they lack the proper enzymes to digest dairy, so anymore than a couple of teaspoons can give them runny poo.

First I hear of yougurt mine get yogurt all the time

I think the main ingredients of rat poison is anticoagulant. The reason for vitamin K is it is antidote for anticoagulant. Try to feed them dark green leaf vegetables, it is high in Vitamin K. The main concern for them is internal bleeding.

I bet the rat made that mess, we use one bit rat poison when they start showing back up ususlly every 6 months and they make a mess when they sit there and eat and when the poison in a container they will grab a bite and sit in the opening while eating so they can keep an eye on things.

I set up some bate boxes in the old horse barn after seeing a couple rats and in 1 night thy ate 2 complete blocks leaving a bit of mess outsde the box.
If the chickens were to eat this i would never know case chickens don't leave anything they can pick up

I only wish it was the rats that ate the darn stuff. usually, we'd smell the carcass if they did. There were only tiny bits of poison on the ground, i have to assume the hens ate it and treat them accordingly.

First I had heard of it too. I gave my birds yogurt when they were younger. A vet that he has on the show says it.

The kale sounds like a good plan to me.

Sorry about that, Yes you can give chickens dairy. Its been done a very long time. All the oldtimers gave their chickens curdled milk. or buttermilk. It makes them weigh more if you're selling them by the pound. Grandmas have done it a very long time.
