I see the chicks like to roll around in the dirt. Do they like to roll around in sand too? Does anyone have a sand/dirt bathing area in their coop?
Thanks:)

I made mine their very own dust box!!! I bought a big bag of peat moss and mix a little sand in with it. I also have a turtle full of pure sand that they are NOT using. They will love you for it!

Yes I have dust bathing areas for our birds and it is actually a very important part of how a chicken stays clean, fresh, and keep feathers looking nice. Not to mention it also help keep the bugs off them.... So yes set one up for your girls!

They don't like pure sand, they prefer mostly loose dirt. A little sand is ok but not a lot. In the summer they like to dig down to reach the cool dirt. Sand holds the heat.

since then, i just put play box sand in the turtle and they actually sit in it when its hot out. you can wet the sand down. make sure you drill some drain holes in the turtle for water to drain out.

Wow they seem to be having a good time. I only have a chicken ark so the run is under the coop then I added a pvc run extension. I move it into the dirt area and they go crazy rolling around and digging themselves a little hole to play in. It actually reminds me of our cat when she goes and rolls around on the patio, the chickens get in their hole and roll upside down and all kinds of crazy stuff.
