I got a rubber egg this weekend too (and two pullet eggs!).

While I was cleaning the coop yesterday Blueberry remained in the coop with me. I tried to kick her out but she forced her way back in. LOL

I let all the girls in while I was still tiddying up a bit and one of my BR's starts hollering at me. (peculiar behavior) So I kneeled down and petted her. She squatted, closed her eyes, and purred(?). So cute. So I went back to tiddying up and she started hollering at me again. Oh boy....my chickens are turning out to be just as bad as my dogs when it comes to attention.

I agree. I watched the video later and was horrified to watch that stage come down like that. Many prayers to all those that were affected.

Two weeks ago I found three shell less eggs, I'm thinking from the same hen. They were on consecutive days all in the same spot.

The first week of August I picked up 6 new birds who have been quarantined. This weekend the silkie frizzle ended up sick, I'm guessing cocci. I started her on Sulmet and then ended up doubling the dosage after there was no change. She is so small I don't think she was drinking enough. No more bloody stool today. This morning I found a different one dead in the cage. This one had no symptoms and was in a different cage than the sick one. I am so glad I quarantined them!! It makes me worry more about getting future birds. The sad thing is the chicken that died was a replacement bird for my son's golden laced Polish who died back in the spring. I guess we will just have to try again in the future.

Thank goodness you quarantined! From the horror stories I've read, it is just good practice. So sorry though about your son's replacement bird. I am sure you will be able to find another one.

Sorry about your loss taprock. It always hurts when you lose one, even if you haven't had them long. I am thinking about getting a few more hens in the Spring, but I don't have a place to quarentine them and am so afraid to get them without being able to do that. I've heard so many stories like yours.

My builder is coming over today to put up a few ceiling fans for me (in my house, not the coop!) and to make a better ramp for the chickens to get up to the roosts. I have an idea for a little quarentine area in my lawn tractor shed that I'm going to ask him about. He would need to cut a pop door and enclose the back few feet of the shed, but I think it would work. Enough to hold maybe six chickens short term.

chikk - Thanks for the reply on my rubber egg question. I haven't gotten one in a few days but was worried that I was not giving them something they needed. I won't worry about it if it's just their way of getting started in the laying process.

Looks like a beautiful day today, not so humid. Have a great one everyone!

That's too bad. I hope your son doesn't take it too hard. I want to add more laying hens but am too nervous about bringing in anything other than day old chicks from a hatchery. There are so many things that can go wrong. Even with putting them in quarantine I just don't think I want to risk it. Although I could live without having to do the whole chick thing again...

wow. i really never thought about quaranteeing.. but i guess that is what i did with out even thinking about it when i got my last batch. i put them in their own temp coop till the big coop is finished since they would not have fit in with the others. now i am thinking i will keep the "baby" coop for the 3 salmon faverolles i am getting this weekend and put them there. i am however getting them from the same lady that i got my silkies from... glad that nothing happened and all the chicks are well and healthy.

Oh, Keyt - that's one pretty boy. I so wish we could have a roo, they are really stunning.

I'm going a little stir crazy at the moment. I gave a broody some eggs on July 30th, so I'm getting close to hatch day if they work out... I haven't candled so I have no idea what is going on in there!

I know what you mean about waiting for the eggs under a broody to hatch. I've got a Vorwerk bantam sitting on eggs that are due to hatch any day and an ameraucana sitting on some EEs and some Welsummers that are due to hatch on the 30th. Plus I've got a buff orpington that sitting on nothing and being quite irritable.

My girls got out of the run this evening. (I left the gate unlatched)
They were enjoying the extra room to run and were playing keep-away with a long white worm.
It was pretty entertaining to watch.

Trouble was, it wasn't a worm at all. It was a piece of caulk that they had stripped from the garage. Still it was that bad until the 1 hen figured out to eat the "worm" from one end. I caught her and pulled it out. She had almost 6 inches of it dawn by the time I got to her.

Had she ended up eating it, I'm sure it would have been fatal.

That got me thinking about some folks losing a chicken mysteriously...maybe they ate something that they shouldn't have.

Anyway, the chore for tomorrow is check all around for anything that is loose or peeling that a silly chicken might eat. And make sure the coop/garage are properly weatherized.
