Sorry guys but My blue cochin was feeling jumpy. the pics are not top-quality. The big white specs on her bum are places where her feathers are SUPPOSED to be growing in. The buff orphington is my chicken who I'm a little suspicious that she has something. If you need pics of inside her feathers, please notify me via forum.
Well if the infestation is bad then there is usually a large amount around her tail and vent. Just push the feathers to the side and see if you can see any. You can also look for white build ups around the feather shafts. I would study up on mites/lice real quick so you can also tell what kind they are.
Then what you treat them with depends on if you treat naturally or if you don't mind using the powders. If not then there are many different brands of de-licing/miting powders usually sold at your local hardware/feed store. If you go naturally then I use D.E. (diatomaceous earth) however it is widely argued over whether or not it really works. It does for me. Best of luck

ok I just checked her and I found some white buildup at the base of her feather shafts near her vent. I did not see any moving mites but we are using wood ash to help kill whatever it is that's causing her to scratch at her feathers so. I'm thinking of using a magnifying glass to help see anything. I think based off of my investigations that she has mites, but it's not that bad. I think. I have a feeling that they're microscopic mites.
Yup, it's mites then. The feathers look broken and chewed because both the mites are eating them and she is over preening herself in an effort to get rid of them.
There are microscopic mites, mites that only come out at night, and many more. Wood Ash is a good idea. I would also dust the area she lives in and the other chickens as well! Good Luck!
I was going to wait till you asked because people LOVE to argue with me on this! I use Diatomaceous (Think I spelled that right!) Earth. It is all natural, effective, and no side effects, egg withdraws or anything. Can be purchased at most feed stores/hardware stores. Great for all kinds of things.
As far as feather growth goes, yeah load her up! She will begin regrowing them as soon as the mites are gone. I have heard that cat food is a great thing to use. I use it on my ducks, never tried with the chickens. Also fresh greens such as collards will do a lot to help as well!
