The flock free-ranges during the daylight hours and still lives inside the classroom during the week and my kitchen on the weekends and holidays while their coops (one at school for the rest of the school year, and one at my house that the children are helping to build for the rest of the chickens' lives after this school year) are finished.

On September 30, 2016, six "day-old" chicks were purchased at a local feed store to create a flock for our one chick that hatched during class on September 29. We had incubated a dozen eggs from a local farm, but only two hatched. The first one hatched early and was prolapsed. The second one hatched at 21 days on Michaelmas morning, so the children named her Michaelmas.
