I truly believe my girls are happier when they free range, I only wish I could let them out all day long but I love them dearly and I would hate to lose one to a hawk.

I try to let them "free range" everyday for 2 or 3 hours, they have to be surpervised because there are lots of red tail hawks in our area

the coop has two boxes with three nests in each on. We just open the lids and get the eggs

this is the back sede of the big run, we partially covered it with a wall so it can be protected from the north winds in the winter and they get shade in the afternoons.

the chicken yard is fenced (about an acre) and we built a little cover for them to run when there is danger. Of course they have not gotten the idea yet since they only go under it to eat the green grass still there

later on, we decided the run was too small for my our 9 hens so we added a 40 x 12 to the original one and cut an opening so now they have access to the whole new run. We also built 2 dirt boxes because we thought they would fight less, however being as sweet and lovely chickens they are, they still fight for the boxes because they all want to be in the same one while the other is empty.

We are new to chickens, just started this last April by getting one day old chicks from our local feed store. We looked at different coop designs on line until we settled on the one we thought was the best for our needs and built it. So far we have been very lucky with our hens, they all are healthy and I must say I have consistently spoiled them rotten since day one.
