I took an old shutter I had and cut in half to make ramps for the chickens. All the hinges and the bolt locks and door knob were reused from other projects and demo sites.

All the framework for the fence came from pallets that used to hold hot tubs, all 2x3s for free and I made the posts out of rough sawn pine and weatherproofed them. The rolled asphalt roof was left over from an ice shanty I made.

The interior light is on a timer and there is a GFCI tucked up in the corner, The outside light is on a motion sensor. All of the romex was from a demo site I was working on. All I needed to purchase was the motion sensor light and the ceiling junction box.

window framed out. The window I added was an antique one I had planned on using for a greenhouse, perfect size for this application. It opens to allow air movement in the summer and is lined with hardware cloth to help keep the coop secure.

chicken tractor that I got for free on craigslist. Reused all the hardware cloth, and stainless steel screws. Didn't need to buy any hardware cloth with helped the budget the most. The doors on the tractor were used as the frame for my enclosed pen and the hatch to get inside of it.

First Chicken Coop

This is my first attempt at a chicken coop for my wife daughter and I. One of my goals was to make our coop economically and with as many reused materials as possible. Including the fencing, waterer, electric fencing and everything for the actual coop we are under 200 dollars. This is as far as I will get this year, but in the spring I will add wires over the run and outdoor roosts. We only plan on having 5 or so laying birds which is why it is so small.
