Windows and awning outside at back. My husband is not a carpenter but he really went to work designing and building all these additions to make the chickens safe and comfortable. He didn't want rain blowing in on them and getting the inside wet. And to think he couldn't understand why I wanted to raise a bunch of nasty chickens - now he really is glad we have them.

The diagonal board under the piece of Plexiglas is the mechanism that holds the window in the closed position. There is a smaller one that allows the window to be slightly open to allow for fresh air to circulate on cooler nights.

Not sure if you can tell from the photos but the windows my husband designed are fully functional. They can be opened all the way when it is warm outside or partially when it is slightly chilly. They can also be completely closed when the temps drop to keep out the north winds. Of course they aren't air tight like house windows but they block a lot of drafts. You can see the wooden know at the top center and just barely see the diagonal brace at the bottom right that holds the window in the closed position.

Here's the wire loop that I pull and attach to the hook to open the pop door in the morning and then in the evening I unhook it and slowly lower it once the girls are all tucked in bed.

Thanks, we also put in the pop door since the last time I took pics. I will get some soon. We have had so much rain I have not spent much time outside.

As the hens get older my husband will raise the roost bars. They don't use the high ones yet and were sleeping on the floor so he put up some low ones. My girls like to sit in the doorway on sunny days when the big door is open so he added a roost bar there for them.
