Coccidia Invasive Forms under microscope

A sick juvenile brought to me by someone who moved. This pullet had more stages of Coccidia than I've seen before, indicating reinfections. She had black feces and roundworms as well. Compare to Coccidia lifecycle chart on Wikipedia. She improved with Ivermectin and Amprolium treatment.

Coccidia is a really nasty parasite. It will take all the fun from raising chickens as you watch them decline. Fairly easy to treat with amplorium added to water for a week and then repeated treatment in 9 days for another week. The key is to do it before coccidia does too much damage to intestines affecting a chicken's ability to absorb nutrients. That is why there is weight loss. Round worms (and other parasites) that is another issue. amplorium does not do anything when treating other forms of parasites than coccidia. For that Ivermectin can be used but it is not effective against tapeworms. There is plenty of information what is used for what kind of parasites. Bright green diarrhea is definitively a sign of coccidiosis and immediate treatment of the whole flock is necessary. Clean water with amplorioum must be the only source of water for chickens during the treatment. Free-range chickens pick up coccidia from earthworms and some bugs, so it is "a part of doing business". Just to make sure what you are dealing with is to send a sample of poop to a veterinary lab which is not that expensive. Then you will know for sure what kind of parasite you are dealing with now and definitively in the future because parasites hang on in soil for a long time and chickens will get reinfected.
