Ebony, another Wyandotte/Marans-X. As you can see, she has the broken effect of a Gold Laced Wyandotte's body but has a Maran's golden ruff. She has the single comb of the Marans as well. Ebony's more of a challenge in the taming department. Very stubborn and doesn't like being held much. I've had to go back to taking her out independantally of the others first thing in the morning and hand feed her her cheese treats whilst holding her and stroking her. Ebony can be such a grump at times! She gives me these deep throated complaints sometimes which makes me laugh. When I group feed the chooks their treats, she'll insist on trying to sneak in to snatch a treat and dash away without allowing me to stroke her. But, I've learnt how to position my other hand so she, usually, doesn't succeed. The others have got used to it and I just lightly stroke them whilst they peck from my hand. I think that Ebony thinks it's some sort of game or challenge. Punky was like that too, but after returning to one-on-one feeding, she decided not to bother!
Now, the Barred Plymouth Rocks boys! All except one, i.e. (next photo). I'm still hoping that one of these four is also a girl. We'll just have to wait and see. They're a lot more energetic than the other hens. You should see them first thing in the morning when I first let them out! They run around, flap their wings and play who can stretch the tallest! Quite amusing. (I suppose that means that all four are boys! But, I have heard that even the hens behave like that! They've been more difficult to tame i.e. to allow me to hold them without complaining! Though they come running whenever they see me. They like to play the "grab treat and run" game that Ebony prefers! That may be because I think they were badly handled by the previous owner/s. But, they're getting better all the time. When they're on top of the "mini-run", they don't seem to mind my stroking them as much when I give them treats. A couple of them have started to fly into my lap to get to the treats. So, there is hope for them yet!
Azzie, Splash and Morena. Splash looks nearly white here. Must be the lighting. Originally, she and Azzie were both completely blue but when I went to collect them when they were 6 wks old, they had changed to this speckled colour (Splash), which the breeder, jokingly, had named them Salt and Pepper. I, nearly, called them that but as I was going to give one away as a Xmas present,..... The name, "Azzie" is a variation of the Spanish word for 'blue' which is "Azul". Being part Spanish, I, occasionally, use Spanish names, like, "Morena", which is Spanish for "many browns". Yes. I realise that she is a Partridge colour.
Now, my gorgeous, gentle and sweet Silkies: Left to right - Flash, Azzie, Morena and Snowy. The BPRs who are around the same age, don't mess with Snowy! It turns out Snowy's a he! The BPRs are only a little bigger than him at the moment. They might have a go at the other three (poor things!) but avoid Snowy at all costs! Even so, Snowy doesn't stand up to the older and bigger chickens. Though, I've noticed that the three other Silkies have started to stand up to the BPRs recently which is good to see. I love the "trill" noise they make when they're contented. It reminds me of my Flamenco Dancing and Teaching days, when I used a louder one which became a signature during my performances. I, originally, got Azzie as a gift for a family friend, but it didn't work out with her fully grown standard chickens, so Azzie rejoined my Silkies. I don't mind at all! I think they've worked out that I will come to their aid, if one of the other hens starts to pick on them. I realise that they're just establishing or enforcing their pecking order and it's all part of being a chicken but I just don't like it. It's probably quite amusing seeing me move quickly at the culprit and squark at it! Lol!

Monet is extremely placid and has absolutely no problems with my stroking or holding her. Book-Book was similar but has a stronger personality. Nevertheless, I adore Monet's gentle personality. I suppose one would call her a Blue Laced Buff, though she has a blue ruff which is more Maran, I suppose.
Punky and Monet. My Wyandotte/Marans-Xs. I think Punky looks more like a Marans than a Wyandotte. They both have the Rose Comb. It took Punky a little longer to get used to me handling her. Some mornings, after getting her fill of cheese treats, Punky will behave as if she doesn't like being stroked. Yet, only a few moments before, she had no problems whatsoever! It comes across to me like a game. This photo doesn't do her justice for her colouring. Her body feathers look like some sort of woodwork with the thin, dark veins travelling throughout.
My two Light Sussex: Book-Book and Cuddles. Book-Book because she softly "book-booked" at me when I first held her. Cuddles (whom I thought, originally, was a 'she') because he nearly fell asleep in my arms when I first held and stroked him. Every time, Book-Book is about to lay an egg, it's Cuddles who makes the declaration, not Book-Book. Not a peep from Book-Book! Talk about being in sync with your partner! He's very gentle with her. I do hope I can keep him! He started crowing for the first time this morning. It was delightful! It wasn't a harsh sound at all! Quite melodic! I'm hoping if I keep him inside the house at night, the neighbours might not complain. Fingers crossed!
