When I read suggestions about whether to heat a coop or not, I think about mornings like this, and take assurance that the well-meaning folks in the 'no-heat' camp don't have to consider the harsh and deadly reality of 29 below zero. Heat on.

1916 Near Cook, MN. Anttie and Sophie Rankila. Earliest family picture with chickens. Funny how a couple chickens look like white blurs because they can't sit still for the long exposure time. Not at all like the stoic Finns who could hold a grimaced face for hours. House built by Juha Tekkoniemi 1892.
This is Webber. She's our darkest Buff Orpington. My daughter's friend (who also raises chickens) suggested that Webber was a rooster because of her size and comb. Shortly after, Webber removed any doubt by laying an egg a day for the next week. COCK-a-DOODLE-NOPE!!
