Here I pulled the papertowels back so you can see the shavings underneath. After week 1 the papertowels go away and they are walking on shavings only unless they are on the blanket/heating pad side. Blanket and heating pad come out at the end of week two as the garage is holding a perfect temp on its own for a 3 week old chick.
That little stuffed animal hanging was in the incubator for the first chick that hatched well before everyone else. he was very loud until I put the stuffed animal in. Now he watches over the chick madness.
They are rarely huddled together which indicates to me that temps are just right.
There is a large dowel and a natural twig above it so they can learn to roost.

I placed two towels in the cart first, then added 2 rubbermaid lids, large pine shavings in half, and a heating pad under blanket in the other half. I pulled the towel back so you can see.
My brooder is a rolling lawn cart. I live in Florida, and my garage stays in the mid to high 80s, so it just takes a heating pad., and a 120 watt light bulb on the outside to maintain 95 degrees.
