They ended up laying their eggs in baskets. That surprised me. The Mountain Dew bottles you see are frozen over night and then put in their pens to help keep them cool. They'll lay right next to them. It's about 102 degrees right now plus humidity. Yesterday's heat index was like 110. So I change out the water bottles throughout the day. It seems to help them handle the heat. I also have a panel I put up for more shade. I moved it for pictures. And come winter time I'll either tarp it or move it into the shed.
I wanted to see the weight difference in the eggs from one that has been laying for a few days to one that is brand new. This egg was laid by a hen that has been laying for about 5 days. It's .45oz. It was laid by a jumbo brown coturnix hen.
This egg was the first one laid by one of my jumbo brown coturnix hens. It's .30oz whereas the other one that's been laying for 5 days has reached .45oz.

I used rabbit feeders for their food. I didn't want anything completely on the outside because I didn't want them sticking their heads out to eat and then get them bitten off by something. Or worse, having their food source be a way in for snakes.
I'm using chick waterers until I can get something else installed from the outside of the pens. I fill them with ice so the water is cold. It takes about an hour to melt and another couple of hours to be hot water. The heat right now is ridiculous!
I turned that old mice rack into my new jumbo brown coturnix quail house! Each section (except the top one because I can't measure correctly!) is 12in high. All of them are 24x24in living space. Under each one an old panel that can be pulled out and cleaned off. I want to find some plastic trays of some sort that would fit and not cost me a fortune because they will last longer. In the mean time, this works.
I traded some homemade egg rolls for this rack. It was originally used to breed mice but hadn't been used in a year. I sprayed it down with bleach and let it sit in the sun for a few days. There were black plastic tubs that slid in the rack that actually had the mice in it. I'll use them for something else.
