I truly believe my girls are happier when they free range, I only wish I could let them out all day long but I love them dearly and I would hate to lose one to a hawk.

I try to let them "free range" everyday for 2 or 3 hours, they have to be surpervised because there are lots of red tail hawks in our area
the coop has two boxes with three nests in each on. We just open the lids and get the eggs
this is the back sede of the big run, we partially covered it with a wall so it can be protected from the north winds in the winter and they get shade in the afternoons.
the chicken yard is fenced (about an acre) and we built a little cover for them to run when there is danger. Of course they have not gotten the idea yet since they only go under it to eat the green grass still there

these are our 8 months old hens, all laying and looking happy
