I was using paper for nesting material, then started adding fresh picked citrus leaves. The leaves give a wonderful scent and I no longer add paper: they just get new fresh leaves every couple of weeks. They like it and I think the bottom mesh is nice and cool, too. The back wall just is open to fencing and it was more sunny than expected so I hung a flour bag dish towel. They can still see out, but feel secure enough to lay!
I set up a second enclosed area for the chickens with portable fence. They were doing so much damage around the yard they have to be contained.
Looking into the new run through the people door. The egg box is just inside the door hanging on the wall. The step stool helps them get in the eggbox or in the coop (white box along the far wall). This photo shows the window on the coop made for increased ventilation. The brown wall behind the coop is just fencing with weedblock cloth being used for shade, without cutting off airflow. Works well!
The new run area: to your left is the uncovered portion of run, to the right is the covered section that connects with a pop door. People door to the far right where the egg box and the locking coop are. Tarp for rain protection for now. I do want a better roof, though. The tarp collects rain like a bathtub!

2013 update. The nest box had a solid botoom that just collected all the sand from dustbathing. When the. Oop and run got moved, I separated the nest box so the coop would fit in the "indoor" covered section of the run. This section all locks up securely at night. The egg box now has a hardware cloth bottom and the sand sifts right out. Nice! Eggs much cleaner, now!
Young Hopi Red Dye Amaranth is red plant in glass with parsley. In front are the sweet peppers from Turkish seeds. They also had that type in Spain and would deep fry them in oil, salt them, then yum!
Hawiaan Ti (pronounced "tea") Great houseplant, cold and heat and humidity or dry air tolerant, drought and flood tolerant, chicken and children safe, edible, comes back from root after frost. And just so flippin pretty!
