Main flock not happy today. Am not letting out unless I am outside on property. (Which is a lot). Am going to try and get run covered this weekend. Lost another female hen 3 days ago. Free range days, when I am not here, are over. Down to 3 adult hens. Not sure what happened. Another reason I want to cover run is so I can get them to laying back in hen house. Last couple of weeks I have been chicken Sheppard just to see where they are laying. It has opened up to a tough year after having such wonderful success in 2015.
Meet 1 of my little friends. Thankfully in Texas we have the unquestionable right to defend our property. And fence posts painted purple here mean a lot more than just no trespassing. I called the precinct constables office and the sheriff office, made a report, identified 1 of 2 dogs and advised them when I saw the dogs on my property again, I was going to kill them. No second chances for predators at my 4 acres. They don't call me armadillo Annie for nothing. Yes it is automatic and I do plan on introducing it to the dogs next time I see them. Will be on stake out for next few nights. Know which direction they come from and the time they roam...
Not a good start for the day. I was woke up at 3 am this morning to an upset hen house and screaming rabbits. By the time I got dressed and out to pens the carnage count was up to 3 of my baby rabbits. I saw the neighborhood dogs run off as I ran up. Know they were neighborhood dogs because they had collars on. They actually tore through a wire cage and pulled rabbits out. I am horrified. I have dealt with snakes, hawks, coons, possums, cats and owls. But this is the 1st time with dogs.
Let out teenagers. They don't fly over fence yet. Wanted to not disrupt sitting hen anymore than I have too. Adult chickens in coop will be plenty till roost time. When I get run covered I can let all out. But don't want to loose anymore adults until I get a nice size flock.

Am so thankful my main flock did not get sick. Have spent my pen expansion budget on meds, extra feed/hay, bleach & Lysol. Looking forward to spring already. Nervous about any upcoming cold weather. Have learned so much on site, just not enough time or money to apply...... Patience creates great appreciation
Latest pic of the sixlets. Last hatchlings when others got sick. These all have stayed healthy. Trying my best to not spread any sickness to them. Had stopped gathering eggs until Feb 2nd. Had to get the sickness out of here.
4 of 8 that made it through the chicken gunja of January 2016. All chicks got sick. 5 roosters and 3 pullets made it through. Have kept 3 girls and 1 rooster. Boy did that sickness clean out the young ones. My main older flock did not get sick.
