My Buff Orpington x Rhode Island Red roo baby, Louie... born May 5th. He's Burnt Orange...Much darker than buff, but not red. (red + yellow = orange!) Will post more pix of him later. His tail is really starting to "feather out". I also have a hen that was born June 6th with the same daddy but I'm not sure if mom is RIR or one of the "mut" hens, that I THINK are Hylines. She (hen baby - named Lily) has SOME barring that I can't explain!
My beautiful Buffy - the dark on his feet is "Blue Kote". We removed his spurs (see hens backs!).
Buffy Roo - with his Hens hiding out under the feed bin. These babies always have 3 LARGE containers of fresh water and 3 smaller containers. They get a light snack twice a day; usually corn or hominy or sweet taters or nut bread. Plus, they always have their chicken "sprinkles" (crumbles), so that they are NEVER DEPENDENT on what they can scratch up... they've pretty much got the bug population down to a minimum!
left to right: Red, Dixie, Pink, Buffy and Curry. Red and Pink were named for the color of their leg bands. As were LYla and RYley; (LY= left yellow +la / RY= right yellow + ley) Missing from this photo are HENri; (she was named HENrietta, but she has a VERY deep voice so I started calling her HENri.), RYley, Ginger and Scarlet. There are 5 RIR's and 3 Hylines that roam the farm freely and are housed in "the BIG coop" and LYla, Louie and Lily are currently staying in the "maternity ward" (a smaller coop inside a fenced area) but are let out to roam freely during the day. They ALL put themselves to bed at night and all I have to do, is do a head count, give everyone a hug and lock the doors.
