Our new and improved 'Coop De Ville' (no plans ... just our own design)... divided into two sections, the one on the left is for 'new arrivals' and / or babies being introduced to the big world ... and on the right side reside the layers and other adults. There are plenty of roosting bars, levels and other areas for birds to go under if they wish. The roof has a very nice overhang and slant so that the birds are kept sheltered from the sun and are nice and dry, even in a driving rain. The roof is insulated so even in 100 degree weather, the underside of the roof is cool to the touch. We rebuilt the original (which was okay) but part of this was to make sure there was plenty of security at night for the birds since we have a lot of predators in the area. The first day we put up the original coop (last summer), we had no sooner put it up and the birds were settling in when a bobkitty ran by the coop chasing a rabbit at a 100 mph. He slammed on his brakes when he saw the chickens. That gave the rabbit plenty of time to scram out of there. But, bobkitty also realized that he couldn't get into the coop and had lost his rabbit dinner. He just turned and looked at us and once more looked at the birds ... did an actual sigh and walked calmly and dejectedly back into the forest. We also rewired the entire exterior to ward off snakes.
