Now onto the patio, priming and painting, fencing.....The roof contains a vented skylight I acquired from Amazon for around $30. Low expectations but I kept seeing references to ventilation. If the plastic unit fails I can always box out the roof hole in plexiglass. The natural light works well over the roosts. Even in New England humidity and an outdoor temp of 95 degrees, coop inside is tolerable.
Move in day. Light source kept on for a few more weeks to get past the cool evenings. They were ready to escape the brooder and confines of the barn. Since have installed roosting boards and an external nesting box...maximizing indoor open square footage. At 6' X 12' there is plenty of room for the 5 hens and 3 silkies. Used sand for the flooring. Highly satisfied. Hanging the feeder cut down on waste and definitely stays much cleaner. Hanging waterer not successful...ended up installing cinder blocks and resting the waterer on it.
Access door and window. Added screens 1/2" hardware cloth. First window sill made from MDF failed first rain. Used recycled board from original barn....believe it is petrified wood by now. Held up after several stormes.
Move in day at 6 weeks. Getting ready for first night. Recycled windows. From house 1847. Helps the coop fit into the rest of the home. Will be interesting to assess choice during New England winters....when the single panes were installed in. The house, it was chilly. The hand made wavy glass really fits in with the farm house architecture.

View of access door, window installed and nesting box in progress. Build nesting box to accept insulation if necessary. Need to monitor temperature extremes and make a decision. The nesting box idea came from reviewing many designers and a random image of a storage cabinet. The clean out door idea came from reviewing horse stables and through the exercise of adding a sand floor after the coop framing was up.
Door is actually an operating window on top and below a clean out door. Pen fetching on side, allowing easy access to door. Nesting box on left with supply cabinet below.
6' x 12' 8' drops to 7' allowing easy Inside maneuverability. Appreciating the ease of movement inside and out. Do your research, think about what will make your life easier and incorporate into the plans. I spent a lot of time researching and listening to others. I wrote Down must haves, next priorities and nice to haves. Set a budget and worked through my list. With clever planning and thoughts made it through most of the nice to haves.
