When I read suggestions about whether to heat a coop or not, I think about mornings like this, and take assurance that the well-meaning folks in the 'no-heat' camp don't have to consider the harsh and deadly reality of 29 below zero. Heat on.

Sunbathing Hens

Our hens sun themselves as a group. Always as a group. Vitamin D and mite control are physiological explanations for this behavior. I personally believe there is a social component to it as well.
