Prolapsed Vent- Day 3- thank you BackYard Chickens!

Got it. This morning she has less white discharge and the vent is still pulled in and looking normal. There is still a smell though and smells tell us a lot. So I'll continue to treat her until that changes. She got a few sprays of Vetericyn Poultry Care to clean, then antibiotic ointment...

Prolapsed Vent- Day 3- thank you BackYard Chickens!

Best day yet. She spent some quality flock time this am after kicking everyone's ass. Gave her a bath again and continued to debride the wound. Do I have to get all of it? It feels really springy and healthy now with very little left. Wondering if infection would start with just traces...

Prolapsed Vent- Day 3- thank you BackYard Chickens!

Another good day yesterday. Her vent remains pulled in and normal from the outside. There's just a little white poo debris on the outside that I sprayed with Vetericyn Poultry Care and mopped up with cotton balls. I inspected just the inside of her vent and feel a few small hard pieces that...

Prolapsed Vent- Day 3- thank you BackYard Chickens!

I will. I’m checking her vent every few hours to see if there’s a change. It’s still in and looking normal from the outside. I’m more concerned about getting the last of the dead tissue inside that may cause an infection. I watched another movie with her tonight. Lean on Me. Highly...

Prolapsed Vent- Day 3- thank you BackYard Chickens!

Had an emergency Saturday morning- let my hens out of their coop and noticed Skipper my bantam cochin had a dirty backside (white streaming poo) and the other hens were just starting to peck her vent. Swept her up and with Skipper in one hand I snatched my emergency ICU puppy plan pen with the...

Yes. Had an emergency lately and this website came through brilliantly. It's amazing what people know here. I've dealt with a broken leg, feather picking and finally a prolapse vent. Thanks again to all the great members.

Just some pics of my coop and chickens

This is a really thoughtful layout. They look happy for sure. Nice to know that rosemary is holding up! Yes, that's the "where are the treats" stink eye.

Talk to me about chick bedding and food!

I use white shelf liner on top of pine shavings for the first week until the chicks learn what food looks like. It keeps them from eating pine by mistake and the gripping is good for traction.

/A Big Bantam hello from Sisters Oregon

Wow, what a gorgeous mixed flock you have. I originally ordered 5 silkies in the mix, but they had a bad hatch and I got just the 1 white fully bearded. Sweet Pea started out shy. She has turned into quite the lap chicken and keeps up with her flock mostly though they wear her out. She has...

Should I put my rooster down?

My heart goes out to you while you make this personal decision. I have a dachshund that had an almost complete paralysis from from the mid section down. After western medicine and chiropractic solutions failed I started moving him about with exercise bands to keep his back end level with the...

/A Big Bantam hello from Sisters Oregon

I'm returning to chicken keeping after many years. My earliest experiences were from living on Guam as a 9 year old and seeing them everywhere. I have a strong affinity for animals and have two horses, a miniature donkey, a dog and a small flock of 9 bantams. I am the alpha female. The...
