My biggest chicken coop regret is not thinking of these things. A place to store feed, oyster shell and unused equipment (heat lamps, chick feeders/waterers etc.) would be really nice. I have also wished for a way to have two chicken coops (convert to a duplex?) for flock replacement. When they...
Hi,
It really has been a while since I spent much time here on BYC. I usually don't think to visit this site when the chickens are doing well (which they are). Family is doing well. My 2-year-old wakes up in the morning with a sleepy request "eat eggs". He enjoys the chickens like we all do.
Purina did get back with me. The nutritionist at Purina does not recommend feeding beans to chickens. They are sending coupons for replacement. Thank you all for your help!
I purchased a bag of Purina layer pellets and found pinto beans in with the pellets. I would estimate a bean or two per pound of pellets. Aren't dry beans toxic to chickens? Are they ok in this small of quantities? I emailed Purina on Monday, but have not received a reply.
A white egg really stands out in a basket of brown eggs!
I've been getting a few white eggs for a while now, but it's still not very consistent. Should I be concerned?
Brown layers: RIR (12), White Rock (3)
White layers: Brown Leghorn (6), Mottled Houdan (1)
Blue layers: Whiting True Blue (4)
I have six brown Leghorn pullets, 22 weeks old. I usually find one white egg/day, sometimes none. The fact that my 12 RIR pullets are producing 10-11 eggs/day makes it hard to have patience with the Leghorns.
Is your Leghorn a single comb or rose comb? Mine (single comb) all have large combs and...
I've heard the same thing, and have often wondered "how tough is the bloom?", so I started a new thread with that question. Maybe we'll get some answers there.
I'm currently one who does not wash eggs (except dirty ones). Those that have not been washed are stored at room temperature for up to several days, relying on the bloom to keep them sealed.
My question: how easily is the bloom compromised? I would understand that unwashed eggs that have once...
"I didn't know" is a point used by those who are quick to sue. If selling eggs unwashed, it might be safest to have some large print on the carton mentioning the fact.
If European countries have come to the conclusion that unwashed and stored at room temperature is best but in America it has been determined that washed and refrigerated is best, I am left with the persuasion that it really doesn't matter. I respect the work of scientists in both continents. It...
Thank you so much for all your help. I promptly bagged and refrigerated the body, so testing is still an option. I've been reading up on Coccidiosis and Enteritis prevention so I can give the other birds the best chance possible.
On a positive note, we still have the top rooster, and the loss of...
Unfortunately, my cockerel expired before his appointment with the veterinarian. The vet will not do a necropsy. He is willing to look at the body and prescribe antibiotics for the other birds, but I was told it's a little bit of a shot in the dark when symptoms cannot be observed. No other...
You may have hit the nail on the head with this one. Enteritis is one thing I did not find in the hours of research that I've done. I did a quick search and found this site:

Figure 3 stage 3 could well have been a...
