I think that is a good idea I always have mine separate for a number of reasons for safety and the fact they need chick starter and I prefer to do 1 bag of medicated just to get them on good start then go to unmedicated I had a friend that gave me 3 baby chicks that were week old mom died...

The coop looks Beautiful!! as far as the nest boxes go I would attach them on the outside where you could lift up to get the eggs and to clean without stepping inside the coop also would give you more space for them. I had my husband do that on my latest coop and it works great!! BTW I love...

Let me know how the light works might even do that before your squats LOL see if it works. You don't need a big light just a light they can see like a 15 or 25 watt I leave mine on all night for them for awhile. then just turn it on before dusk and turn off if you want later.

6 months ago we also lost our beloved cat of 14 years we got him at 8 weeks and he lived on our 10 acres with us his whole life. We got him when our mixed breed dog was 2yrs. They were the best of buddies to the end and I know Spanky (dog) kept Egor (cat) out of trouble and harms way many times...
