Topic of the Week - What do/can you do with unwanted roosters?

I live in town (NZ) an roosters aren't meant to be kept but I've got one. Council know about him, seen him heard him etc.. But he wears a collar, they work, and as long as you change them often and use soundproofing in his house (I haven't got a coop yet) then they're quieter. My neighbors have...

    Future Breed Creation Project

Oh I agree, hundreds of thousands of culls, but you'd think instead of wasting the meat, they'd end up on tables not in the compost. I've done a bit of research, to create a foundation it takes 5 breeders 5 years to get something established, it doesn't show numbers but I think if someone is...

    Hands on hatching and help

There's a well written thread on here about how and when to help hatch. It explains every aspect and is very good. I use the person's methods hatching my own. Someone else might know the thread, but I'll find it later an share it

Seeing the two sets of wings together like that makes it easier to see the difference.. bumblefeather's feathers are rounded, where Mr noisys are more pointed.. going by Their similarities, that's how you'll be able to sex them. You're right about wing sexing harder on those :) Waffles sounds...

    Future Breed Creation Project

I like that name for a breed.. BYMM... Or Mix Mutt Egg Hut.. Thanks for the idea hehe Butt to clarify on the breeding from a Back yard chicken aspect.. it takes 5 generations to establish consistent similarities in any animal, but 10 years to solidify it. Anyone can do it with their back yard...

I agree, yet it's still really interesting and something I'll be looking for once I start breeding an actual line. Right now, they're just my pets as a first time chookie owner.. I've had to learn a hell of a lot the hard way, fast.. so I'm ready for the challenge. I've spent more time online...

I think you're right about the white rock... She's got the temperament, size, shape of the WR, but the look of the leghorn.. wonder what her babies will look like.. She's going to be crossed with her dad first, then cross a boy back to mum and follow the line breeding rule from there.. But...

Thank you.. I value your input. The colour of leghorn ears I didn't know, the rest of her looks like them.. I love that she's different, even her personality. She's cheeky, bold, super cuddly, extremely ticklish haha when she does the squat an brings her wings out a bit, I tickle her armpits...

That's not my video, it was the one I found when I hatched my first ones, I'll add a pic of 5 of mine, they are 100% full sisters :) The 'leghorn' is what everyone says she is. It's not just my chicks that I've wing sexed, a friend 6 chicks too, 3 dif breeds. We got it right. Hy-Lines as you...

I just grabbed one of the original video links I found last year for you and anyone else. Thanks, it wasn't planned... mine jumped into the production line within 3 months of having them, what was meant to be 3 Hy-line pullets at POL turned out to be 1 13 month & 1 5 yo hy-lines and 1 2 month...
