Well I've had my 3 new biddies for about 2 weeks now and everything is going well. Just let them outta the pen to free range Sunday and they're happy as pigs in ** , cruising around the yard, checking things out, taking dust baths in the wing of the horse paddock. So far the most exciting thing...
Okay this isn't exactly a CHICKEN but you'll get the point.
Years ago I left my horse at a certain stable to be trained. ( Little old lady who lived and breathed horses was the head trainer and she was a horse whisperer long before the phrase was coined. ) Anyway, she preached to all the...
So I got 3 chickens from my co-worker, a large heavy rabbit hutch, water and food dishes and layer mash. Brought everything home Friday night at dusk and decided to concentrate on the details tomorrow.
Well hubby seemed to forget that not everyone has Sat. off and he turned off the alarm. (...
The reptile forum I'm also a member off has a thread just like this. The best one was the member who had a relative that was telling his kids that turtles shed their shells. No matter how many times he tried to re-educate him, he insisted that it was true.( I guess he had them mixed up with...
When I was little some big shot photographers from New York City came to our place to take pics of all the wildlife. The sun went in and my mother offered them tea while waiting for better weather. While they were talking they were asking questions about the wild geese and ducks and they came up...
All very good points. Hubby was talking about an A-frame structure over top of this. ( I just like the fact that he actually started talking to me about this! Up till now this has all been MY idea!)
Another thing that has occurred to me is that collecting eggs would be a PITA!
He did...
There was a book that my local tractor supply sells a book on coop designs. The one I liked best was made outta straw bales. Buy a truck load of straw bales. Make a box outta the bales. Fashion some sort of door and roof. That's it. No hammer, lumber and nails and it sounds really warm in the...
There's someone close by me who sells big blue plastic barrels $10. apiece. Can I make a chicken coop outta this???? I was thinking if I took three barrels, laid them on their side, made a pyramid outta them and velcro-ed them together ( I'm saying velcro for ease of cleaning. I want something I...
P.S. I work at a small animal vet. We also do boarding for dogs and cats. Any dry food the boarders turn there nose up at, gets saved in a bucket and taken to feed the chickens. ( Better not tell the chickens they're eating their brothers and sisters only processed! )

Stories from long ago....My Italian grandparents always had chickens and they always got table scraps. Things I remember tossing to them as a kid...lobster shells and burnt lemon sponge cake.
I LOVE the sounds they make when a new food source is introduced, kinda a chicken purr.

For those of you who are saying, "Zucchini in brownies? Why would you do such a horrible thing?"
Zucchini does not change the flavor of whatever you add it to. It mimics the main flavor and intensifies it and makes it more decadent and more moist. A very good thing for chocolate!
I also have...
THIS recipe I WILL share. ( I've been sworn to secrecy for some of my Italian grandmother's recipes though. )
Zucchini Brownies
-1 1/2 cups of white sugar
-2 cups of flour
-1 1/2 cups of unsweetened cocoa powder
-1 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda
-1 teaspoon of salt
-1/2 cup of vegetable oil...
Everybody I know is all of a sudden giving me their baseball bat sized zucchini because they know I make zucchini brownies. This is a good and a bad thing. Good because whenever I wanna switch days at work with someone, I just tell them that there is a pan of brownies in it for them! ( I usually...
