    Curious duck neighbour

Hello I'm not on here much, but I happened to see this and I could not resist answering...pardon me if I seem a bit defensive. Do the ducks look healthy? I think it might be best if you went over (assuming you are on good terms) and told them how much you truly enjoy watching the ducks (if you...

    Falling off roost while sleeping

Sorry to hear about your chicken. I'm a complete newbie, but we lost a chicken this summer, our first year of having chickens. She was a Cochin, also so sweet. It was summertime and warm, but she never went inside at dusk as usual and everyone else did. We put her in, she could not hold onto...

    Bubbly eye on Buff Brahma

I have sand in the coop too, it does work wonderfully. We just decided to try the deep leaf litter in the adjacent run for the winter. They spend most of their time in it, although they are free to run out on grass/dirt. During the warmer months, they are on grass in movable pens.

    Bubbly eye on Buff Brahma

No other symptoms, the other birds do not seem infected today, I am not sure why they seemed different to me at first, so I have kept them all together still. Basically it is just her eye, but I am pretty sure this isn't an injury or a worm. She's eating well and behaving just fine. Today was...

    Bubbly eye on Buff Brahma

Thanks, Brandy21410 I am considering your advice regarding sacrificing her. Where would I have to take her to? At this stage she still looks good and laid an egg this morning and yesterday, although I am keeping those separated. I have no intention of selling birds or chicks if we ever hatch...

    Bubbly eye on Buff Brahma

Thank you for your info again. Yes, I am pretty stressed about this. I know a number of folks with chickens and none have ever had this issue, so I feel like I must not be doing it right. Someone I know told me not to give dairy as it gives them sour crop, but I do give probiotics, not daily...

    Bubbly eye on Buff Brahma

This is seriously bad news,as it is our first year of having chickens and they aren't even one year old yet. We plan to keep adding to our flock, so does this mean we should cull them or how else to eradicate this? Not to mention neighbors behind have chickens and moved theirs up to our...

    Bubbly eye on Buff Brahma

Thank you for your help. This is what I was afraid of, as I had been googling. Where are these antibiotics available from and how long do I have to treat the birds for? Do I have to treat them all in case and do I need to disinfect the coop somehow? Do you know how this may have occurred, my...

    Bubbly eye on Buff Brahma

It's our first year with our pet chickens... so now that it's winter they are in closer proximity with each other and also we decided to do the leaf litter method in their run. Wondering what this could be and how it happened? If it's the leaf litter causing germs to hide in it? We have...

    Sand as coop bedding

Thanks Aart, that link is great. I'm still really new and have to find my way around this site, so I appreciate your directing me, especially as we're in the process of building our winter coop. Flywheel, oh , yes, of course. I guess I just wasn't sure how it would practically work out.

    Sand as coop bedding

Thanks, yes you're right. I guess I shall have to find my own right way by trial and hopefully not too much error. I think I'm going to try sand on the poop boards as soon as we make them and pine shavings on the floor come this winter. What type of sand and where to get it?

    Sand as coop bedding

So what's a newbie supposed to believe... Here Lisa of "Fresh Eggs Daily" says - Limiting access to sand (no sand in the coop, please, it's just a bad idea for so many reasons) http://www.fresheggsdaily.com/2016/07/all-about-chicken-crops-and-poultry.html#more Now I'd like to know the so many...

A fun guessing game this morning, from my coop!

My KC's started at 19 weeks so it's possible.

    Winterizing

Super, this is all very helpful! Sounds more doable than the underground way for me.
