  • I am in Doylestown Ohio and have been raising chickens for the last 5 years. It started out as a 4 H project for a grandson and kinda grew on me. Grandson moved on to bigger animals and I inherited the flock!

I lost over 40 chickens over the winter due to dogs, coyote, cooper hawk and raccoons. I had 4 hens and 2 roos left one hen went broody and two others joined her (all in the same nest) now I have 19- 2 week old chicks all free range. Now I need to get family to build a better hen house in a better fenced in area that has netting over the top. I was really upset about losing all my silkies

I'm so sorry for your loss! We ended up building a much smaller enclosure for our chickens because of predators (in our case, raccoons, foxes & hawks). The coop is predator-proof with hardware cloth on the floor to prevent predators from digging under (yes, it happened), and the run has fencing on ALL sides - buried under the ground as well as overhead. I wish the area was bigger, but at least the chickens are safe.
