We took the rooster out for 4 months, and the only reason she is in with a rooster now is one of our "new" little hens is a rooster. If it would have been from mating I would think it would have been a slow process of losing feathers…her's was literally overnight/over a couple of days while...
That's what I thought too, but she is the only one of 20 hens missing her entire back feathers, she had a full back before molting and after…nothing. We even put the rooster in a separate pen and they still did not grow back. Just seems strange.
