What is the best age to butcher non-meatie roosters?

I think I have about 8 roosters I'll be butchering for meat. They are 5 weeks old now. I want them to free range to fatten up, but I was not planning to integrate them with my normal flock. Any suggestions on how to free range two separate flocks? My hens don't free range til noon-so maybe let...

First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

Our family got chickens last spring, but this is our first spring with baby chicks! I purchased these today. They are 3 days old. 4 RIR, 2 Black Sexlinks and 2 Barred Rock. We currently have 2 Buff Orpingtons and 1 RIR rooster. These baby chicks are super cute and fun! I'm pretty sure I could...

    Tractor Supply Chicks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our local TSC sells a mixed variety. Today I picked up RIR, Black Sex Link and some Barred Rock. They also had bantams, but I wanted good egg layers so I didn't purchase any of those. This is good to know and will be sure and ask about it before my next purchase. Our local TSC has sold out...

Do baby chicks sleep with their heads on the floor?

Thanks to all who have posted here! I got baby chicks today and they did just as everyone here says they would. Stretched out, chin to floor I thought for sure they were dying. So glad to know I'm not the only one who panicked and am thankful for your wise advice!

Is this a Roo or Hen? RIR or another breed?

Thanks! For the breed of the black one, I am only going by what a friend told me. I live in an area where most of our chickens come from animal sale barns/livestock auctions. More roosters come out of those places than preferred!! Thanks for your help.

Is this a Roo or Hen? RIR or another breed?

Thank you! You are so helpful. The long, thin pointed feathering is what made me think the mixed breed could be a rooster. I thought it could've been a difference in breed, but the mixed showed all signs other signs of being male. Same with the black one. Its characteristics and mannerisms...

Is this a Roo or Hen? RIR or another breed?

Hi all! I can't figure out if these are roos or hens. I thought the one below is a RIR hen, but she is aggressive toward the other birds, mounts them and is 30 weeks and hasn't laid one egg. I couldn't get a good snapshot of her face, but I was hoping by saddle and tail feathers someone who is...

Preparing Your Flock & Coop for WINTER

This thread is so helpful! I am from Arkansas and we typically have mild winters. We get snow from time to time, but a really bad winter consists of ICE. So...I plan to winterize with straw and I like the idea of wrapping the coop with plastic to cut down on wind. We get lots of wind too. I...

Difficult dilemma: One remaining chicken was attacked by a raccoon and may actually survive. When i

I appreciate your post! We are new to chickens and the raccoons got all but one of ours. She survived, but had a head injury as well. She is bouncing back little by little. I can tell she is lonely though. I am hopeful to get more chickens this weekend at our county fair. I'm thankful we can...

    Attacked by Coons!

One of my girls survived a raccoon attack. She has a head wound. I cleaned her up with water and Neosporin. She initially had diarrhea with small worms. I wasn't sure if she was going to make it. We are three days out from the trauma and she's not eating much feed, but free ranging well, eating...
