    Oh my gosh! Is this what my flock is gonna look like? They are starting their first molt. My rooster has lost only his tail feathers so far. I'm a little scared for them. Do they make chicken sweaters?

    In the winter, when our chickens can't get out to the dirt, I've put play sand or sand box sand (sold at the local hardware store) into a sturdy cardboard box inside the coop. They seem to get good use out of it! I added a little diatomacious (?) earth at first, but I don't think it mattered...

    What is the roo in your profile pic? The one I'm keeping is maturing to look alot like him. He's a bit shy, but so sweet to my hen (they are rarely apart).

    Sure, he/she is 5 months now. will take a pic when I can in daylight. Penguin now has full bright red wattles and comb. Also fought with my first roo today.

    I read that. Here's the thing, out of 5 straight run chicks, I believe I have 4 roosters! Maybe I'm just hoping for a hen where there isn't. When do you know for sure? When they are jumping other chickens, or another way?

    Wild hunter chicken

    Thanks so much for all the great feedback and replies! I'm excited to be able to let them hunt for themselves. Friends who don't free range are telling me I should get them to eat more traditional feed, but they're looking mighty healthy! You guys rock! Anybody from up my way? Vermont.

    So our 3 month old Barred Rock/Brahma mix hunted down and ate a grown mouse out in the yard this morning. Is that normal? I've read they'll eat "pinkies" but a fully haired mouse? I've also seen them try to eat a garden snake, about 6 inches or so, but that one fought back and slithered...
