So, after spending time with my moms meat turkeys, I have fallen in love with them, and think I might be interested in breeding and raising my own turkeys next year. Now, I'm aware that turkeys are difficult to breed and raise, but what are the turkey breeds that are better at it than others...
Kind of wondering if theres something wrong with the hen that laid this egg, it is the ugliest egg I've ever seen come out of a chicken! All ridged and lumpy and gross, the inside was normal though, so maybe it was a fluke, but dang.
So I've read of people doing this with broody hens, but would it work in this situation?
Mama hen had 2 chicks hatch 3 days ago, 1 chick hatched today. The new chick was cold and half dead when I found it, (she was busy feeding the older chicks and didnt want to sit on it I guess) but I put it...
So to start off with, I have a hen with 2week old chicks that broke out of confinement and has been leading her chicks on a joyride around the yard. Shes not one to let me catch her or her chicks, so I let it happen. To my surprise, none of the other chickens or the rooster has bothered them...
I feel ya there haha. Yeah i thought for sure they were dead, and i was going out to the coop to take them away. Lifted up that chicken and all of them had hatched overnight, over a week late
I definitely dont need any more broody chickens haha. My flock of 9 javas either have chicks, or are trying to hatch chicks. It started with 1 broody and now they all are. My only eggs now are coming from my 7 sexlinks and 1 amber white chicken. Glad i have those sexlinks. Not a maternal bone in...
I just started hatching chicks with hens too. The first batch took 29 days to hatch, the second batch took 18. I pretty much gave up on 21 days for hatching as being reliable haha.
Ehhhh I'd have to stew her for awhile before she'd be edible haha. Especially since shes been brooding for so long shes not exactly meaty. These javas are almost impossible to break the broody behavior. I've "jailed" them for up to 2 weeks and as soon as I let them out, they fluff out their...
My cats leave the chickens alone. The chickens will chase the cats around if they feel the cats are too close. That being said, i bet a hungry cat could kill a chicken, especially if its a smaller breed chicken
So I have this hen, mottled java, that I let sit on 2 eggs. Her first go around, I found 1 egg squashed with baby inside, and the other was out of the egg but dead. At first i thought, "oh how sad, it must have been an accident". This is her second go. Its a few days early for them to hatch...
