I am in western PA. I have 8 chickens and have been selling to friends and giving to family for almost a year. Today, I went to sell at the farmer's market and was told that I could not put a price on my eggs since I did not have a license. However, I could ask for a donation to get around...
I have never seen a coop like this before. I am going to look up the books mentioned in the library and do some reading on this. Thank you for the inspiration! My husband will need some convincing too... And then we'll need the funds for the materials and the time to build one!

We were originally going to get only 6 chickens, but hubby picked up an extra 2 in case of loss in the early days. All 8 survived and flourished.
The egg eating began while there were still 2 nest boxes. I had also heard that 2 boxes were necessary for 8 chickens. I'll put the...
I was using pine shavings at the beginning, but switched to straw since it was cheaper. I suppose i can go back to pine shavings. They like to kick the pine shavings out of the coop too, so I'm not sure if that's any better.
I don't have sand in the run. We move the coop around the yard...
I have 8 golden comets. Our run is 5x10 and the coop is 5x5. The coop has a hole in the bottom for the ramp, with a lip around it made of 1x1s. The nest box is raised up on bricks and it has 3" high sides.
I just don't know what to do.
My chickens make a complete mess of their coop. I put down straw and try to change it out every 7-10 days. I also use straw in their nest box. Their coop is over an attached run (chicken tractor). There is a hole in the bottom for their ramp. They are...
Thanks for all the info. There seems to be so many conflicting POVs that it's hard to know what's best. Fridge or counter? Wash or not? I guess we'll not wash them, but keep them in the fridge, until we are ready to eat them. We'll wash before eating or selling (if/when it gets to that point).
We just started getting eggs (2/day for 3 days now). I've just been putting them straight in an egg carton. But my husband is freaking out that I haven't washed the eggs - with soap and water. He's insistent that the eggs are crawling with bacteria and e.coli and it's disgusting because the...
Congrats!
I got my first eggs on Saturday. They are very small also. I've been getting two a day now, and they're all the same size. We've eaten the first two - no problems there - and are saving up so we can get a real meal out of them (instead of just a bite each, lol).

They are golden comets. We brought them home from TSC on 3/22/11 (they arrived at the store hours earlier).
I am in Western PA (New Castle/Sharon area). Temps mostly in the mid-high 80s.
