There was an interesting article in Rural Delivery this month about the whole biosecurity/backyard flocks thing. I checked their page but they don't have the article online. I picked up my copy at the Co-op feed store, not sure where else it's sold.
Zucchini in homemade hamburger helper? Sounds interesting - care to share a recipe? I use it in chocolate cake and I'd like to do up some pasta sauce with it too. Also looking forward to having it grilled on the bbq. I've heard it's really good dehydrated so I'm going to try that. For the...
A bear?
Can the chicks get back into the coop on their own? Some days I just leave the feeder in the coop instead of putting it in the run. I figure if they're hungry they'l just go back inside to eat.
Haha, I was reading some other thread here (I think one of the homemade laundry detergent ones) and people kept talking about "solar dryers". I was thinking, "What kinda newfangled invention is that and why have I never heard of it?" Yeah... When I figured out what they meant I felt kinda...
I'm in the same boat as you, mylilchix. This is our first year and we've already built the coop, run, etc. I'd like to eventually have chicken wire over the top of the run, but the netting will have to do for this year (I haven't even put it up yet). The birds aren't out in the run unless...

Last year we just had a few tomato plants - we'd moved home from out west and had way too much to do without having a garden to tend to. This year we planted two types of carrots (orange and purple!), onions, yellow zucchini (my mom said I was crazy to actually plant zucchini)...
Sammi - I tried giving them some yogurt one day last week. They were more interested in walking in it, lol. Will give that a try again this afternoon though. Maybe today they'll realize it's food. I sprinkled a bit of feed over the top last time hoping they'd make the connection, but it...
The Nova Scotia arm of the chicken marketing board is in charge of making sure the 20 free-range chicken farmers in this province play by the new rules, which are being billed as bio-security measures to improve food safety.
It sounds like you're right Mary - there would be way more than 20...
I got some at Canadian Tire in the garden section. Maybe try a place near you with a decent selection of garden items? It was with the trellis netting and things like that.
The stuff I got is a black plastic netting. It's very light. I can't really describe it so here's a link. I'm not...

@ cat. Our dog hopped over the fence into the run to have a visit with the chicks. A little kick in the rear and a firm scolding cured him of that. I don't think he'd have intentionally harmed them but he quite possibly would have mauled them to death trying to play with them.
I'm...
I should add, when I say hot I mean hot for here. It was around 86 today. Hot for us. but from the reading I've been doing I see that it gets a lot hotter where some of you are!
Thanks for the quick reply Antlers. I went out to the coop to see if I could find a tag off the old bag of feed...
I had planned on easing my way onto the board instead of just jumping in with a question, but I browsed a bunch of the older topics and didn't really find an answer (like I have with all my previous questions - you guys are great!) So... Please allow me to pick your collective brain.
Ok...
