So after almost a week of 3 eggs a day today there were 4 & the 1 new egg is a different shade of the other 2 "greens" & also twice the size of all the others so I know it came from our Brahma/Ameraucuna! Now to keep fingers crossed that our little girl lays us a bright blue shell...
1st egg!!!!!! Now which one laid it? They all hatched out Aug-Sept so the only one I would rule out is the smallest who has been molting out her fuzzy feathers the past 4 days!
The cinderblock waterer heater hubby built me is awesome!!! waterer no longer freezing, coop stays warmer (running 2 60watt bulbs) & now I only have to have the heat lamp on for a few hours in the early morning to simulate extra daylight for laying, so it's actually cut my "costs" in 1/2!!!! & I...
Caption this gem! My 4-5mth old gals outside for the first time in their lives! (Just brought them hm last wknd & have had them locked in the henhouse. They were in a stall in a barn b4 that!
this is our 1st winter with hens, so while we did lots of research & built our henhouse with winter in mind. We are finding some things just aren't working as well as we'd hoped.
Coop is insulated &we put in a heat lamp & put our waterer directly under the lamp. The henhouse itself seems to be...
oh my I am new on here & when we were researching how to build our coop I used some of the Wichita Coop ideas. Infact our coop is featured on their fb page!
so I started reading your thread I cried when I read about your fire. I can't believe what you went through. I will go follow your new...
Plywood under the cinderblock (so I can remove the whole "heater/holder" in spring) hubby scewed the recepticals & their boxes to the plywood, glued the cinderblock to it, electrical taped up the hole for the cord so shavings & dust can't get inside. then the tile just sits on top. I cleared the...
Our latest cold snap it got down into the mid to low minus 30 Celsius temps & its not uncommon for it to stay in the minus 20's for days going on weeks.
So just the heat lamp isn't keeping our water from freezing on the gals so yesterday hubby built a cinderblock heater/water holder. There is light recepticles in both "holes".Can't wait for the glue to finish curing so I can put it in this afternoon!!!
Hmmm I may have to head to UFA tomorrow for a sack of scratch, (I feed 17% layer ration w/a 2nd feed tub available in the henhouse of DE) but I can make room in my feed tote for a sack of scratch to be used as a "treat/bribe"! When we caught them on Sunday & when I pulled them from the travel...
I was not wanting to stress them out too badly with settling into a new home & letting them get used to just being the 5 of them, (they all hatched out between Aug-Sept so there is some size difference & 1 is definately alot smaller than the others) I didn't want to push holding them right from...
