I have 6 Easter Eggers who are about 24 weeks now and have not started laying. I have one Red Star who is giving me an egg per day, and that's it for my flock of 16!
I think that's so cute! My hens will come to the door on cold winter mornings as if they are trying to get us to let them in! I think they know there are people inside and they either want food or your company...
I pay $20 per day for my petsitter to come twice daily, care for our dogs, cats, and chickens, as well as do some plant watering. Maybe $5-10 per day would be reasonable?
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned yet that a flock of hens can be dangerous for your dog! I had a 10 lb chihuahua who made it into the run looking for food scraps. I heard him yelping and ran out to find that the flock of 15 was attacking him. I think he could have been injured or even...
From what I have read online, those Giant Mealworms are sterile and not good to use for a mealworm farm. Curious to hear what others think. When I received my order, some were already pupae when they arrived, so I would be suspicious if yours are all the same.
My first coop was like that, the first floor was the run, enclosed with plastic netting. There was a ramp in the middle that went up to the coop, where they had roosts and laying boxes. The ramp had a pull cord so they could be closed in at night. I called in my chicken palace, it was amazing!
I have been reading that you don't want the colony too damp, but our average humidity here is usually under 20%, so things dessicate long before they mold. What do you think?
That's too funny! My neighbors have been feeding a road runner pair for over 20 years now. One day I saw one of them run by with a tail hanging out of his mouth, and was concerned about the possibility of mice in the area, when I realized the rodent was white and must have come from a pet store!
I have a seed starting tray full of grasses that I put in the rabbit hutch for my 3 week old chicks. At first, they wouldn't go near it, but now, they lay in it, dig through the sod, play keep away with various seeds they find, and of course, enjoy the greenery!
I just found 4-5 of my first beetles and they look exactly like that picture. I turned them right side up and left them on half an apple- is there hope for them?
