All hens look all over heathy, super red combs/wattles, shiny feathers (what little some have!) and I'm getting about 7 eggs a day from 8 girls.
Skins not irritated. This one in particular is definitely not broody. Hmmmm....I cleaned the coop and treated with DE but I saw nothing creepy crawly.
I brought this girl in to bathe her, get a better look at her bare bum and to check for mites. This is what I found and I have no idea what to think!

I snapped this shot the other day when my son and I were hanging out with the girls. He was chowing down on a honey crisp and when he accidentally dropped it, there was a frenzy trying to get to it.
Looks to me like Daisy is telling Pepper to try it out first
I should also add I'm trying the deep littler method for this winter and so thats where my main concern is coming from. I want to make sure they have good air quality while keeping the moisture down.

I'm mostly concerned about our 0 to 20 below snaps. I'm hoping they'd be ok with the pop door open because doing much more work to the coop is gonna drive my husband up a wall
Final update: Whatever caused them to get so swollen and black is beyond me. After a few days of the topical meds, her waddles are healthy again.
After they were black, they turned white and then back to red. I'm guessing it wasn't frostbite after all but it seems so unlikely that both sides...
