good ideas. The car antenna I used has a clutch release so it stops on a bind or holdup so it was easy for stop and start points. I used 20 gauge steel for the door. Light sensors are ok but my coop is shaded and it may not open or close on time. Just a couple ideas for you to think about.
I just made and installed an automatic door. cost about $100. used a motorized car antenna and pine boards for frame. i do hvac service so the wiring was very easy. I saw many types online but mine is designed for long life and simple controls. i will try to post a video later. the build is even...
Healthy looking bunch. I just moved my dozen to the coop last night. Im in west virginia its a bit cooler but im not giving them heat. They seem to warm up their little corner area well. Gonna check on them when the sun breaks. I will try to post some pics.
Not exactly positive but they should know what to do when the sun goes down or a little after. my chicks are almost ready for the coop im gonna give a week with no heat and out they go.
Ive got a dozen two or three week old chicks. I turn off the light at night. Its about 80-85 during the day in the brooder. They eat and grow like crazy. Hopefully they can go to the coop soon. Im in wv and we still have cold nights ahead. 68 degrees todays high
I water them daily. thats winter and summer. having more chickens means carrying more jugs not making more trips. i was giving advise based on how i keep my chickens watered without electric. maybe when i come up with a very safe design i may have a heated water container.
I leave about two inches of feed. i usually fill it back up every couple days. i just smashed my last pumpkin for them the other day. they devour the whole thing but have a hard time busting them on their own. :)
This applies to the last post. sorry about your loss. im a hvac service tech and i am very worried about adding any electric to my coop. the straw dust is very combustible, only takes a small arce spark. im not sure what a cookie tin heater is but i know you never ever use anything electric that...
Im new to raising chickens.only have a free hen and rooster. Hope to have about a dozen by spring maybe. I dont plan on adding heat to the coop but if needed i will put heattape on the water jug. So far they dont seem to be roosting high they are nested on the straw floor. I made the roof of...
