My girls started laying for the first time about 3 weeks ago. I didn’t think they would start until spring but we’re getting 2-4 eggs per day from 6 chickens, a few of whom are still growing their combs.
Not a very flattering shot of Annie so here’s one of her and her sister Billy before their feathers started falling out where it appears they may be growing their combs?
Thanks for the info. I didn’t even think about that being the start of the comb but that makes perfect sense since the others girls (different breeds) are just starting to grow theirs. I thought maybe the Polish hens didn’t have combs due to their fancy hair doos. 😉
I noticed that one or both of my Buff Laced Polish hens appear to have a pecking injury above their beaks and while examining them I noticed what appears to be irritated skin and nodules of some sort. Are these nodules inflamed follicles or whatever the opening is that the feathers emerge from...
Excellent experimentation and write up! This will be incredibly useful for us since our chickens are confined to a small enclosure due to the number of predators in the area.
Thanks, it was a labor of love, for the chickens of course. The vixen had me worried but she and her cub have moved on although I have seen one of them passing through occasionally. They seem to ignore the coop but that’s probably because of the electric fencing.
We had a ritual established but it came down to holding a handful of fresh greens from the garden just out of view of the camera (phone) and taking lots of snaps to get one good one.
Here’s a good picture of the gang a couple weeks ago before the elec fence for the main coop was ready. Only one missing is Sunshine the Jubilee Orpington so I added her below as well.
I revived this thread to update and thank everyone for their help and advice and forgot to do so. THANK YOU! I don't think this would have turned out as well without all the help and advice that was offered as well as the wealth of info on this site.
BTW, the wife says they are only 14 weeks...
Some more positive news on this thread. Penny who was the subject of this thread at the start has made a full recovery and at 17 weeks she is now at the top of the pecking order. She is confident, inquisitive, smart and sadly a little bit of a bully but she is alive, healthy and very beautiful...
Just a quick update here to say that the coop is 90% complete and has some very happy tenants! Left to complete are trimming up the roof panels and building the nesting box which will be mounted on the front side of the coop, and replacement of a temporary roosting bar.
I designed and built...
Thanks @chrissynemetz, @rjohns39, @drumstick diva, @Starburst for the well wishes on my birthday. It was a mellow one as you might image and spent at home working on the chickencoop which is finally done. Hopefully I'll have some time in the near future to post up the process and results.
