I have an acquaintance looking for a swan. She had two and lost one to a coyote. Now her property is better equipped to deal with predators, and her one swan is so lonely. Location: Illinois or Missouri
I plan on trying some solar bulbs in the coop this year. We liked having them in the house to save electricity (great for bathrooms). https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CL71HHY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
We just brought home two 3-wk-old silkie chicks from a backyard breeder on Friday. One walks around shaking its head and opening its moiuth a lot. Now I noticed blood on the shavings and observed it passing a bloody dropping. So, if I need to treat it, I know I will have to treat the other...
We had two ducks, a male Rouen and a female Khaki Campbell. The female just got out and went into our big pond. She dove under but couldn't find her way back up under the ice. My little girl saw her dive under and feared the worst. She ran out immediately and tried to lure the duck back to...
Thanks for your detailed reply! I am interested in the freeze/thaw effect on the virus. Our winter has been up and down. For now, we are continuing to house the 6 (out of 10) remaining pullets separate from the established flock. However, they are on the same property, and if the virus is...
We are so discouraged....it had been several weeks since the last chick (two had had to be culled a month apart) showed signs of Marek's (leg paralysis) and we had put it down. I was hopeful. Today we lost another, at about 20 weeks of age. I have kept the chicks isolated from the established...
Thanks so much for your input. I realize I spelled the disease name wrong. I am trying to understand about the need to put the other chicks down. It seems I have read about others who had chickens which, although, exposed, did NOT get Marek's. I wonder if it is from going back and forth from...
By the way, we have destroyed the chick which was obviously affected. I just don't know what to think about the other 7 that are left. They are all about the same age (one is a couple of weeks younger). We got them from the feed store at he end of November, at about 7 weeks of age. I guess...
Last month we lost a chick to Mareck's disease. Saturday, another, at about 14 weeks of age, had stiffness in its foot. We feared a repeat of what we had gone through with the other chick, so brought her in the house to separate her. She is not improving, but becoming more paralyzed in that...
Thank you for the concern and for all the help. My husband took care of the chick last evening when I received the message. I sure hope it won't run through the rest of the chicks! Do you always get vaccinated chicks?
This poor wee chick's right foot was turning under this week, so my son taped on a cardboard shoe. Then the left leg began having problems, buckling under him, and sticking out to the side. We have to sit him upright or he flops over. He is eating and drinking, but can't get around easily...
I forgot to mention...they are on shavings in a box. The brown one would be about 8 to 9 weeks old now. It is smaller than the other 8, though, although it does eat and drink fine.
Thanks. The Wyandotte died (actually, we put it out of its misery...it was opening and
closing its beak all the time like my little zebra finch did before it died, and was oh-
so-weak...poor thing!). The brown chick is having trouble with both of its legs now. I see some posts talking about...
Thank you for the encouragement! I will try to get a photo of the chicks tomorrow. I see the point about lowering the temperature in their box, or I will never get them used to the outdoor temperatures. Our problem right now is that one of the littlest ones, a Wyandotte, is ailing and I don't...
Thank you for the information. I am in Missouri, as well, and just got some chicks on November 26. Seven are about 8 weeks old now, and three are about 5 weeks old. I was told (by the feed store) that I would have to keep them inside for 3 to 4 months. They suggested that I put them under a...
