Can you eat the first egg?

First egg today from my exactly 25wk old girls! Not sure which one it was, but it was an ameraucana as it's green (and about 1/2 the size of a large egg)! We are all so excited. Friend and my husband were saying you weren't supposed to eat the first eggs due to the girls being on chick feed...

    Most friendly chicken breeds

My definition of a friendly chicken is one who doesn't run or fuss when you pick them up and enjoys being held, hangs out with you etc. My BO and one of my BRs are definitely super friendly and my other BR (smaller) is friendly as well. My two ameraucanas however are not. They will eat from my...

Get chicks to go into coop at night?

What do you know! My chicks are in the coop on their own! They are sitting at the door to the run so I can see them there. I'll check on them again later and since it's going to be so warm here tonight (mid-60s for low) think I'll just leave their door open. Still going to scale back on the...

Get chicks to go into coop at night?

Coop door is inside the run so I assume I'll do like my friends do and once they figure out how to tuck themselves in at night I'll leave the door open so they can come out whenever they want in the morning.

Get chicks to go into coop at night?

I'll just continue to pop them in the coop and hope they figure it out eventually. Right now when I put them in the coop I shut the door so they're stuck in there till morning- there's food / water still in there (in addition to the run), any thought as to when to take that away?

Get chicks to go into coop at night?

So my 4.5wk old chicks (fully feathered) are now in the coop/run since last Thursday. Will they just start naturally going into the coop at night? Last night I forgot about them while we were getting dinner together and when I went out at 830 (full dark, still about 73 degrees) they were all...

San Antonio suburban chick mom here!

Good morning everyone! I've got a small flock of 5 pullets (fingers crossed, please please please) that are now 4wks old and out in their coop/run (we still have a light in there at night for them). I have 1 Buff Orpington (Marsala) 2 Plymouth Rocks (Molé and Tikka) and 2 Ameraucana (Nugget...

    Today I moved my girls

Loved the video! That's a lot of chicks! We are semi-urban San Antonio, just 2m outside of loop 410 near the airport so the city limits us between 3-5 birds. Enough for my family and gifts of eggs for certain. My routine with the chicks is this: wake up wish, go open the coop door and the...

    Today I moved my girls

Loved the pics! I'm in South Texas and we've just moved our tiny flock of 5 to their coop too. They are right at 4wks old. We have moved a light in there for them, but I want them to start getting used to sleeping in the dark- what type of heat source do you use? It's getting down between...
