    is this lice? (with photo)

what about dusting on a rainy day? I dusted the girls last night while they were on the roost with permethrin, but of course today they're all standing in the rain. Should I re-apply?

has anyone used this product? http://carefreeenzymes.com/id36.html I know that frontline and advantix are non-toxic enzymes, as well.

just read that permethrin is highly toxic to cats. My cat definitely hangs out near the chicken coop, as that's where all the action is. I also have a beehive nearby! I think I will treat just this one bird with the permethrin, and DE the coop, as I don't see any evidence on the other birds. Is...

darkmatter, what type of cedar (shavings?) and why do you think it works? I have both DE and Prozap permethrin, and have never dusted a bird before. The first time I applied the DE, it seemed to function as an earwig attractor. Are these my only options? (Can't find Sevin...)

thank you! I'm on it, and appreciate your help. Their coop is located in such a nice spot beneath 2 huge maple trees, with both shade and sun. However, these trees support a huge wild bird population - so I need to stay on top of lice/mites.

yes, she's wet in the photo, and not much for posing. The purple is from a spray of blue kote that I put on her forever ago to see if I could prevent others from pecking her prolapse. If the white spots and feather base clumps were poop, they should've dissolved in warm water???

I also want to mention that this hen's comb is red and tall, and she's active & social, and eats and drinks normally. The morning that I brought her in, I felt like she was walking uncomfortably, and preoccupied with her rear.

I'm new, and still finding my way around, so forgive me as I posted this in the wrong place at first. My red sex link hen is 4 months old and has been through a lot. She's a bit smaller than the other 5 she grew up with, but has recently been successfully treated for coccidiosis. She has had a...

okay - so I've been through a lot with my prolapsed hen, but I see that her prolapse has been healing nicely, is rarely visible anymore, and she has been laying clean eggs. She still has a dirty butt, though, with occasional bleeding, and is preoccupied with it. Is it possible that she has...

    isolating a bird

I did not use the prep H as I read some conflicting info about whether or not it works. I felt that getting her to stop laying for a time might really help her to heal. The prolapse is rarely exposed anymore, but I see it pop out when she poops. Regardless, I do see that she is trickling blood...

    isolating a bird

recently I isolated a 4 month old hen with a prolapse, but got discouraged and returned her to the flock too early. I just felt bad about keeping her in, as she seemed miserable. Now I realize that she is not healing properly and seems to be in pain, so I'm making one last ditch effort before I...

    Poopy butt

I have a hen with a poopy butt, and I took a fecal sample to the vet. Even though she is 4 months old, she tested positive for coccidiosis. I think getting her tested was very valuable to allow me to give her the correct meds. Unfortunately, she still has a poopy butt, as she has a prolapse, and...

Anyone ever had a problem with bees?

I agree that it is unlikely a swarm that has settled this late will be able to survive the winter, however, I had a hive swarm late last year that made it through (but in standard equipment.) First off, you have to be sure that you actually have honey bees. Where I live, beekeepers who are...

    feeding an isolated/prolapse chicken

I rouse her about every 8 hours for a short layer mash and water break. Previously I had been giving her yogurt, but my vet told me that he was suspicious of chickens eating dairy, as he thinks it's unnatural. I then crushed up some probiotic tablets in the whole flock's feed. I'm curious about...

    feeding an isolated/prolapse chicken

my Meatloaf has just been successfully treated for Coccidiosis - I had her droppings tested so I know that she is clean. I've had her for about 10 weeks, she is almost 4 months old, and was the only one of the 6 I got to have the parasite. Her stunted growth was pretty obvious, but worse, she...
