How to bathe a day old chick....

It's not necessarily appearance, it still has a bit of egg shell stuck to its back and its trying to clean itself up. I'm also trying to figure out if the blood is from the hatch or from having to unglue itself from itself....We're naming her Lucky. She was about to get thrown out because we...

How to bathe a day old chick....

So....I have this baby....this morning, she was stuck in her shell due to a lack of humidity. Despite all the warnings I've heard, I couldn't watch her suffer, so I helped her out. After a spray bottle, some heat, and gentle tugging, I unglued her from herself and she is loud as can be and in...

Strange behavior from my broody, can you help explain?

Well then I guess that's not so strange is it! I thought she was good to go, she set on her clutch for 4 days with the little squirt running around. and can I just add, watching that interaction makes me want to never incubate again and only use broody hens! I LOVED finding the little fuzzy...

Strange behavior from my broody, can you help explain?

A few weeks ago I had a broody hen that left the nest so I quickly moved her eggs to the incubator. Some of the eggs were laid at different times so once the marked ones hatched, I set the rest of them under a different broody hen who was sitting on her own eggs. She was fine with that, I...

Not sure what to do now...

Okay....I think I'm going to wait until dark. The baby is so snug under momma's wing and she is not happy about me sticking my nose in there! But, using your theory, she might leave the nest now since she has a baby....hmmm... I didn't think about that one!

Not sure what to do now...

Oh wow, I never would've thought about that, does it work? Do they get un-broody?? I will separate the baby, I don't want it getting hurt! Thanks for the reply.

Not sure what to do now...

I've just discovered a baby under my broody hen. (sooooo cute!!!) I set these under her when she first went broody because the other broody hen left the nest, so I just put them under the other momma. I'm thinking of taking the baby out and putting her in the house since the hen will be on...

I think I have my first broody hen!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could; but does she need access to the outdoors? Or just to food and water and a place to poo? I'm sure I can do that. Do you think that's better then the brooder pictured above? Is it better to keep her with her flock? I'm guessing I should wait until tonight to check the eggs and mark them?

    cutest chicken names!

I have a barnyard mix roo that we named Jeff, after the publix deli guy who recommended an awesome BBQ sauce....isn't that awful? We also have Gary, a light brahma roo, named after the professor at UF who helped me figure out he didn't have an infectious disease and had just knocked himself...

I think I have my first broody hen!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am SO excited! One of my adorable little brown leghorns appears to be glued to one of the nests. I noticed her in the nesting box at an odd time (for her) and crossed my fingers...that was Sunday afternoon...and she's still there! That would mean a hatch date near the 7th of June. I'm...

How long before rigor mortis sets in??

Thanks for the reply. I suspect he was attacked by an older hen or the main rooster after they were let out...and barely two hours passed before rigor set in. I have no clue what happened! So frustrating. Thanks again.

How long before rigor mortis sets in??

I just found my beautiful FBC Maran roo dead in the run....just, dead. All the other chickens are fine, no hisotry of infections no sickness. I'm trying to figure out if he never made it into the coop last night (which would be weird because there is no obvious trauma to his body) or if it...
